An American tragedy took place in Cheshire, Conneticut recently!

The family of Dr. William Petit was allegedly brutally murdered by two parolees who have extensive criminal records. Police say Joshua Komisarjevky and Steven hayes are alleged to have broken into the home of Dr. Petit, a prominent endocrinologist. Police say one of the hostages who was not immediately identified, was ordered to accompany one of the criminals to a local bank, and withdraw an undetermined amount of money.

Police say bank employees called them after apparently noticing something strange. When police arrived at the home of Dr. Petit, they found his wife, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, 48, and daughters Hayley, 17 and Michaela, 11, dead. Police say the career criminals torched the home before leaving. Apparently Mrs. Petit and her daughters were sexually assaulted. Police say they nabbed the thugs as they left the Petit home, driving the Dr.'s stolen SUV.

Dr. Petit was severely beaten by Komisarjevky and Hayes. Some how he mananged to escape. Just how, is rather confusing as of this writing.  Komisarjevky and Hayes are both being held on 15-million dollars bail each. They are charged with assault, sexual assault, kidnapping, burglary, robbery and arson. State police say additional charges are pending.

Both of these men have been arrested in the past, at least 20 times for burglary offenses. They were on parole at the time of the murders. Police say the Petits did everything according to what law enforcement instructs those who are being held hostage should do. Yet, three ladies are now dead!

Greg Kelly, the son of the Police Commissioner in New York City interviewed a retired Washington, D.C. detective on Fox Weekend on Sunday. The dectective outlined what people should do when the bad guy has the upper hand. Kelly wanted to know if law abiding citizens should have guns. I was surprised by the detective response. He said that in this day and age, people should arm themselves!

Then Kelly, a U.S. Marine, said something "Incredibly Stupid." In closing his interview, he warned his viewers about the dangers of owning a gun. Said Kelly, "Some police cautioned people about owning guns, because they may use them on themselves." Now, how stupid was that? Remember, his father is the Police Commissioner in New York City. New York has some of the most draconian gun laws that you will find in America. Yet somehow, hundreds of people are murdered in New York City every year by criminals wielding an illegal handgun. Greg Kelly was simply regurgitating the thoughts of his father. He was also saying that Americans are "To Stupid To Be Trusted With A Firearm." Think about that for a moment.

This is the typical liberal template. I feel safe in saying that I believe that Dr. William Petit is a liberal. He lives in the upper middle class community of Cheshire, population 29,000. This tight knit community is replete with colonial-style homes. The Cheshire Police Chief said it all. "In Cheshire we're not used to this type of event." How many times have we heard those words following a heinous crime?

People who live in these small enclaves believe that the police will protect them. "BULLETIN, BULLETIN...." Police seldom prevent crimes. They investigate them!

My heart goes out to Dr. Petit and his family. However, listening to liberals like Greg Kelly and other anti-gun zealots will get you and your family killed, literally. I'm williling to  bet you that Greg Kelly has a license to carry a gun in New York City. But, like all elitist anti-gun proponents, he doesn't want you armed. He pretends to only care about your well being. However, if people like Kelly cared about the average American, he would advocate strongly that every legal citizen willing to purchase a firearm, do so. We are an embattled nation, what with crack-cocaine gangs killing one another for turf, criminals who are turned loose by the judicial system, and proceed to murder innocent people, pedophiles, and just average people commiting acts of random violence. We are indeed a nation surrounded by violence!

We also have to be concerned as to when the next terrorist strike will occur in the United States. For those who stand against the 2nd Amendment, their action is criminal in my mind. Dr. William Petit's family is dead. The tragedy that happened to this man should be a wake up call to us all.

First, stop saying "This Could Never Happen In My Little Town." The second thing to remember is this, "Stop Letting Liberals Fill Your Head With Fear About Guns." Remember, these same anti-gunners either, (1) Own firearms, or (2) Have bodyguards who "Carry Guns."

If what I have said in today's column doesn't change your mind regarding guns, fine. But do not tell other Americans they don't have a right to arm and protect themselves and their families, just because you are a elitist coward!
